Kid-Friendly Drag Shows Spark Outrage

The attacks on the LGBTQ+ community continue as kid-friendly pride month events have sparked outrage among conservatives. This has led Texas republicans to promise to work towards introducing legislation that prevents minors from being able to watch drag shows.

Texas republicans now threaten to move towards prohibiting minors from attending drag shows. State Rep. Bryan Slaton announced on Monday that he will introduce a bill that bans children from being present at drag performances. This after a Dallas Gay bar hosted a kid-friendly drag brunch last weekend. The event titled “Drag Your Kids To Pride” went viral when videos of kids tipping drag queens hit social media. Slaton took to twitter to call the events “disgusting and dangerous.”

On Friday June 3, 2022. DC Public Schools had a Pride event for LGBTQI+ high school students in DC and its surrounding areas. The event featured food, music, ball competitions & drag performances. DC Public Schools sponsored the event in an effort to promote safe and affirming spaces for LGBTQ+ students. Similarly, this event also sparked outrage among people and organizations who are against minors attending drag shows.

By the same token, other U.S. republicans like Marjorie Taylor Greene echoed Slaton’s comments, pledging to fight to “protect” children from drag shows. In contrast, supporters of the LGBTQ+ community have called out the republican party for not working towards gun reform following the mass shooting in Uvalde while moving to ban drag shows for kids.

This follows a variety of legislative efforts that target LGBTQ+ children shuch as Florida recently passing the “Don’t Say Gay bill.” Restricting educators from mentioning anything related to the  LGBTQ+ community.
