Gay Couples Petition India’s Supreme Court to Legalize Same-sex Marriage

Four gay couples in India have urged their Supreme Court to legalize same-sex marriage. India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has been given a deadline to respond to their petitions. A legal battle is expected as Modi’s government has refused to move on marriage equality in the past.  India’s Supreme Court decriminalized homosexuality in 2018 by repealing a colonial-era ban on gay sex. While being gay has become legal, India’s LGBTQ+ community reportedly continue experiencing discrimination and rejection from mainstream society.  The Supreme Court filings argue that gay couples in India are denied equal rights as long as same-sex marriages aren’t legal. Without the government recognizing their marriages, gay couples in India are denied rights linked to pensions, adoption and m...

Gay Marriage Bill Gets Stuck in US Senate

The U.S. Senate postponed yesterday's vote on legislation that would codify same-sex marriage after negotiators were unable to secure enough republican support for the bill. A vote on the bill will take place after the Nov. 8 congressional elections. The news comes as a disappointment to those who hoped that the Biden administration would be able to protect marriage equality through legislative action. This as Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas spoke on dismantling the same-sex marriage protections that have been established by the court, after the same was done to abortion rights. The decision to postpone the bill indicates that democratic lawmakers are optimistic as to their chances to win big this November and secure enough democratic representation in the senate to pass the bill. ...

Marriage Equality Bill Still “Incredibly Important” to Biden

The Respect of Marriage Act which seeks to codify same-sex marriage, still “incredibly important” to Biden said White House press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre yesterday. The bill was left as unfinished business by the senate before leaving for August recess.  The White House Press Secretary was asked if Biden has reached out to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to ensure that he schedules a vote on the bill. She responded that she had no private conversations to read out but reiterated Biden’s support for the bill and for the LGBTQ+ community. “This is incredibly important to the president. We heard from him back in 2012 when he was one of the first voices to talk about how important marriage equality was being ahead of many others. He has been an advocate for the community. He...

House to Vote on Protecting Marriage Equality

The house is attempting to codify same-sex marriage into law as the overturning of Roe v. Wade puts other Supreme Court decisions at risk. Lawmakers have introduced a bill that seeks to protect same-sex marriage after Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas stated that Obergefell should be the next case to be reviewed following the dismantling of Roe v. Wade. On Monday, a group of primarily Democratic lawmakers introduced legislation called “Respect of Marriage Act” in the house and the senate which seeks to codify Obergefell into law. Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York said “we cannot sit idly by as the hard-earned gains of the Equality movement are systematically eroded," in a statement released by the lawmakers. In a concurring opinion to the overturning of Roe...

71% of Americans Now Support Marriage Equality

Gallup’s annual Value and Beliefs poll has revealed that more than 7 in 10 Americans are in favor of marriage equality. This is the highest approval rating same-sex marriage has ever received. Gallup began taking the poll in 1996 when only 27% of respondents supported same-sex marriage.  The polls reveal that the support for gay marriage is growing among all demographics. Including those that historically have been more intolerant towards the LGBTQ+ community. Republicans, Protestants & people 65+ are all slowly becoming more supportive of same-sex marriage. The majority of adults 65+ became supportive in 2016, so did Protestants in 2017 & Republicans in 2021.  While weekly churchgoers are the least likely to support marriage equality. The majority of those that don’t go to ...
