71% of Americans Now Support Marriage Equality

Gallup’s annual Value and Beliefs poll has revealed that more than 7 in 10 Americans are in favor of marriage equality. This is the highest approval rating same-sex marriage has ever received. Gallup began taking the poll in 1996 when only 27% of respondents supported same-sex marriage.

The polls reveal that the support for gay marriage is growing among all demographics. Including those that historically have been more intolerant towards the LGBTQ+ community. Republicans, Protestants & people 65+ are all slowly becoming more supportive of same-sex marriage. The majority of adults 65+ became supportive in 2016, so did Protestants in 2017 & Republicans in 2021.

While weekly churchgoers are the least likely to support marriage equality. The majority of those that don’t go to church have supported gay marriage since 2004. With 82% of them supporting gay marriage in 2022. A large increase since 2004, when only 52% of non-churchgoers supported marriage equality.

Although the approval for same-sex marriage among Americans has grown slowly from year to year. Experts call the steady increase in support for marriage equality a reflection of a change in American values and attitudes. As some fear that the current Supreme Court may unravel Obergefell. Based on their polling, Gallup argue that banning same-sex marriage would go against the will of the American people.
