Singapore to End Ban on Gay Sex

Singapore’s prime minister announced yesterday that a colonial-era section of their penal code will be repealed. This will end the city-state’s ban on gay sex. The ban itself was set in place by the British empire but continued even after Singapore gained its independence. Gay marriage however will continue to be illegal. The prime minister called the move“the right thing to do, and something that most Singaporeans will now accept,” when announcing the legislative change. In the same speech, he also said that moves will be taken to ensure marriage stays between a man and a woman. Which many consider a move to pander to the state’s religious right, as they oppose granting freedoms to LGBTQ Singaporeans.  Section 377 of the penal code that banned Gay sex was put in place by the Britis...

Darling overheard the conversation and decided to step in. Rather than attempting to physically disarm the man, Darling struck up a conversation in order to distract him. Monkeypox Outbreak Disproportionately Affecting Men of Color

The monkeypox outbreak is hitting men of color the hardest as Black and Latino men now account for more than half of U.S. cases. A statistic that experts claim mirrors the HIV epidemic and exemplifies the long standing racial inequities in America. In San Francisco, Latino men account for about 30% of monkeypox cases, almost twice their share of the population. While in Santa Clara county, 41% of monkeypox cases were among latino men, who only make up 26% of the county’s population. Black men account for 82% of monkeypox cases in Atlanta but only make up 61.4% of the population. Although monkeypox isn’t a sexually transmitted disease and can be passed to anyone through close contact, the World Health Organization has revealed that 99% of reported monkeypox cases are among men and at...

Poll: Florida’s LGBTQ and Ally Voters Aren’t Feeling Gov. Ron DeSantis

As students in Florida return to class, school officials are figuring out how the implementation of the “Don’t Say Gay” bill will affect students and their ability to do their job. The new laws are banning LGBTQ-related conversation in class, books are removed from shelves and state leaders are targeting gender-affirming healthcare, despite the fact that every major medical association supports it as safe and lifesaving for transgender youth. While targeting LGBTQ youth might make Gov. DeSantis popular in certain circles, the LGBTQ community and its allies are undoubtedly an integral part of the Florida electorate. GLAAD conducted a poll among LGBTQ and ally voters in Florida and found that 71% believe the laws' intent is to attack LGBTQ people; 70% say the laws are emotionally damagin...

The Maldives Urged To Stop Prosecuting Men for Having Sex With Other Men

Humans Rights Watch urged the Maldivian government to revoke a local law that criminalizes consensual same-sex conduct this week. This comes as Maldivian authorities are prosecuting four men and investigating several others for supposedly having sex with other men. Humans Rights Watch argues that these investigations are politically motivated and that the Maldives' strict homophobic laws are inhumane and have been put in place to appease extremist groups.  The vacation hot-spot was stunned by a sex scandal earlier this year when videos leaked of a Bengladeshi man having sex with prominent local male officials. One of these videos is believed to depict him having sex with the brother of the current Parliament Speaker and former President of the Maldives. The Bangladesh national was arre...

LGBTQ Afghans Call on the World To Save Them From the Taliban

A group of LGBTQ Afghans have been protesting in the capital of Pakistan this week. A 24-year old protester revealed that her friend was kidnapped, raped and found dead hanging from a tree the following day.  The Islamabad protest was initially supposed to take place outside of the British embassy but was moved after pressure from the Pakistani authorities.  This Monday marks the one-year anniversary of the Taliban regaining control of Afghanistan after a 20-year American occupation.
