House to Vote on Protecting Marriage Equality

The house is attempting to codify same-sex marriage into law as the overturning of Roe v. Wade puts other Supreme Court decisions at risk. Lawmakers have introduced a bill that seeks to protect same-sex marriage after Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas stated that Obergefell should be the next case to be reviewed following the dismantling of Roe v. Wade. On Monday, a group of primarily Democratic lawmakers introduced legislation called “Respect of Marriage Act” in the house and the senate which seeks to codify Obergefell into law. Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York said “we cannot sit idly by as the hard-earned gains of the Equality movement are systematically eroded," in a statement released by the lawmakers. In a concurring opinion to the overturning of Roe...

Ted Cruz Attacks Same-Sex Marriage

Republican senator Ted Cruz attacked the Supreme Court’s 2015 decision that legalized same-sex marriage calling it an overreach. In his podcast episode that aired last weekend, the Texas lawmaker discussed the possibility of the Supreme Court dismantling Obergefell. This comes as the Supreme Court recently went against precedent by taking aim at Roe v. Wade, allowing states to ban abortion. According to Cruz, Roe v. Wade & Obergefell “ignored two centuries of our nation’s history.” Arguing that it should be up to the states to define marriage. “Marriage was always an issue that was left to the states, we saw states before Obergefell, some states were moving to allow gay marriage, other states were moving to allow civil partnerships,” Cruz said.  Cruz argued that the constit...

Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay Bill” Goes into Effect Today

Florida’s Parental Rights in Education law, also known as the “don’t say gay bill,” goes into effect today. Meaning that public school districts in Florida now have begun rolling out policies that limit educators’ ability to discuss LGBTQ+ issues and identities in the classroom. School officials in Florida have already been accused of verbally warning teachers to remove photos of same-sex partners, rainbow articles of clothing and any pride or allyship related stickers from schools. The School District of Palm Beach have sent teachers questionnaires asking them to review materials for content that references sexual orientation, gender identity or race.  The bill bans “instruction” about gender identity or sexual orientation for students in kindergarden through the third grade “...

Supreme Court Justice: Same-Sex Marriage Should Also Be Reconsidered

In a historic decision today, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. This allows states to ban abortions and deviates from the courts tradition of respecting legal precedents. As a result of this, dozens of states are expected to ban abortions within the coming days.  Justice Clarence Thomas said on Friday that the court should reconsider rulings relating to same-sex marriage and contraceptives in a similar manner. In a concurring opinion with today’s decision, Justice Thomas expressed that "in future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court's substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell." Today’s decision rescinds the previous ruling that protected women's access to abortion up until 24 weeks of pregnancy. Also known as the point of ...

Andrew Gillum Indicted on Charges of Conspiracy & Fraud

Former Florida gubernatorial candidate, Andrew Gillum is facing a federal indictment on conspiracy & fraud charges.  Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Justice revealed their 21-count indictment against him and his former campaign advisor Lettman-Hicks. The indictment accuses the two of illegally directing funds from Gillum’s campaign to Lettman-Hicks’ private company.  Gillum’s legal defense team denies the fraud & conspiracy claims. One of the charges Gillum is facing has to do with a 2016 trip to New York and the tickets he received to go see the play Hamilton. This comes as these were paid for by an undercover F.B.I agent posing as a developer saying that he wanted Gillum’s assistance with project approvals.  The scandal-ridden politician ran for governor of Flo...

Kid-Friendly Drag Shows Spark Outrage

The attacks on the LGBTQ+ community continue as kid-friendly pride month events have sparked outrage among conservatives. This has led Texas republicans to promise to work towards introducing legislation that prevents minors from being able to watch drag shows. Texas republicans now threaten to move towards prohibiting minors from attending drag shows. State Rep. Bryan Slaton announced on Monday that he will introduce a bill that bans children from being present at drag performances. This after a Dallas Gay bar hosted a kid-friendly drag brunch last weekend. The event titled "Drag Your Kids To Pride" went viral when videos of kids tipping drag queens hit social media. Genital Exams? Ohio House Republicans Pass Anti-Trans Bill

OHIO - House republicans passed a bill this week that targets transgender athletes in high school and college sports. This means that female trans athletes in Ohio now have to play on teams of the gender they were assigned at birth. The bill states that disputes are to be settled through “genital examinations.” The house voted on Wednesday as the country celebrated the first day of Pride month. Republicans were able to ban transgender girls from girls sports by passing the bill through a back-door path. They added it to a bill that was meant to provide mentorship and resources to teachers. Transgender female athletes now have to play on male or co-ed teams. Students that want to dispute the team they're allowed to play on must bring a signed doctors note confirming their biological...

LGBTQ+ Asylum Seekers Face Dangerous Situation at U.S. Border

Asylum seekers trying to migrate to the U.S. through the southern border with Mexico have mostly been denied entry since title 42 was issued in March, 2020. The Trump era policy allows for the immediate expulsion of migrants countering national asylum laws in what they claim to be an effort to contain the spread of Covid-19. Thus forcing LGBTQ+ migrants to await their asylum hearings in northern Mexico. The LGBTQ+ migrants that seek asylum at the U.S. border are primarily fleeing Central American countries due to violence, discrimination, persecution & poverty. In fact, studies suggest that members of the LGBTQ+ community are more likely to be victims of violent crimes in these nations. Title 42 has created a dangerous situation where migrants from all over the world have been ...
